Au Jardin des Colibris Ecolodge&Spa

Secret lounge was perfectIt was a great stay, beautifull location and very nice view to Deshaies. The beaches where great and the small town of Deshaies was also great. And the location is next to the Botanical Gardin witch is realy beautifull.

Very comfortable, well run property. Our villa (Pain) did not have aircon, but it didn't matter, we spent 8 nights here, and slept really well with a ceiling fan and mosquito net. We spent most of our time on the patio area watching the hummingbirds and lizards. 3 minute drive into Deshaies, and several good restaurants, and a couple of minutes more to the Grande Anse beach. Pool area is lovely, and the hosts were kind and helpful.

It was wonderful. They could not do enough for us - from loaning us umbrellas and making us dinner reservations, especially Carla- she went above and beyond. She speaks fluent english which was very helpful to us. We stayed at the Secret Lodge and the view from the balcony is amazing. the hotel was extremely clean. There is airconditioning in the bedroom only- which worked out fine. There are no screens on the windows- but we didn't have a lot of bugs. And the birds would fly in and out of the apartment which was cool. You can drink the water on this island- it's clean and I always get sick- and didn't. If you like fish- you can eat it everyday. Bring a water proof parka so you can walk about or borrow umbrellas. It rained 2 out of 6 days- not bad. We rented the car through Magaloc via the hotel, I might want to rent from a larger carrier as they were not waiting for us at the airport or had a shuttle that came around constantly like the other companies. We had to call them which can be tricky. And the larger carrier might have had someone who spoke english - god forbid we got in an accident how would we talk to the rental car co? Through the people at the hotel? We are big fans of Death in Paradise which is why we ended up near Deshais (pronounced D i). It's extremely mountainous on the west side of Guadeloupe- the driving is not for the faint of heart. We have been to Sicily and the The Amalfi coast, Rt 1 in CA- that looked flat in comparison to this side of the island. Study some french before going- so at least you look like you are trying. Highlights of our trip was the Maison du Cocoa, Snorkeling with the guide (recommended by hotel, didn't speak any english but he talks a lot so it was good to ignore him and look at the fish) snorkeling on our own- we rented kayaks and went back out to Pigeon Island an the botanique garden that was next to Jardin Des Colibris. An Artist Coop (full of locally made nice but affordable art/crafts) that was near the kayak rental place. We did go to 2 rum distillers. The Rhum Museum - try the JR Lime- it is delicious and the tour at Bologne was great- they have an english tour (many places do not) The open market at Basse Terre- where we bought fresh vanilla beans and nutmeg to take home. Making my own vanilla extract as we speak! We did go to Vanille coffee growers- that drive up there was harrowing to say the least. Don't go unless you have a tour. They only give you a card in english to follow along. I did buy their 100% guadeloupe beans- that are delicious. Go! It's an adventure.

We had a great one week stay at Au Jardin Des Colibris in Jungle Lodge 2 in December 2023. The grounds, garden, and pathway areas are beautiful. There is a “front desk” hut where Clement checked us in and provided the key and all the information we needed. All the staff at Au Jardin are super friendly and helpful, and they made dinner reservations for us and suggestions for activities and hikes. The pool and spa area is very nice, and there is a bathroom / change room there as well. Our jungle lodge was positioned about 16 steps up from a pathway that leads to some other units. Our lodge had a deck with two lounge chairs, plunge pool, and a covered well-equipped kitchen area with a hightop table and four chairs. The entire deck/pool/kitchen area was very private due to the deck railings and foliage around the lodge. Inside the door to the unit was the bed, some seating, a large closet and a bathroom sink/vanity. The toilet was in a separate room with a door, and above this was a loft with another bed. Another door leads to the outdoor bathtub and shower area which is completely private. This setup provided a really unique and fun experience for us. A few examples: It was glorious having a hot shower outdoors. At every breakfast there was a Lesser Antillean Bullfinch waiting to see whether he would be able to sneak a sip of orange juice, a few melon seeds and some crumbs. At night, we slept with the doors wide open with the sound of the breeze and tree frogs to lull us to sleep. We did use the bed’s mosquito netting even though we did not see a lot of flying insects. Preparing and having meals outdoors was wonderful as well. This was our first gîte-style accommodations so we don’t have a frame of reference for what is typical but we found it well equipped. There were bath towels, tea towels in the kitchen, hand soap dispensers and dishwashing liquid, garbage bags for kitchen and bathroom, coffee filters, two rolls of toilet paper, some citronella candles, a foldout drying rack, and more. The kitchen had a large refrigerator/freezer, a microwave oven, toaster, kettle, drip coffee maker, stove top, and various dishes and utensils. What was missing was an oven and a dishwasher but we did not need them. We did order our first night’s meal from Au Jardin in advance and it was in our refrigerator when we arrived, and all we needed to do was microwave it. The location is just a few minutes drive from Deshaies, which has nice restaurants, a terrific boulangerie-patisserie, shopping, and a couple small grocery stores. From Au Jardin, our favorite beach Plage de Grande Anse is just an 8 minute drive north, and Plage de la Perle is just a few minutes further. In the other direction, Plage de Malendure is a half hour drive and offered a very calm black volcanic sand beach and good snorkeling. What a beautiful place to stay! We booked the jungle lodge and enjoyed it very much, especially the outdoor kitchen with terrace and pool as well as the outdoor shower - very cool experience. Big thank you to Carla who was very helpful and had a lot of good recommendations for us. The place is near Deshaies which is a good starting point to get around the isle. Would always book it again.

We (Dutch couple) spent 2 fantastic days in this beautiful small eco resort. It was very tastefully decorated and it had everything we needed. Good bed, little tropical garden and terrace, hammock, outdoor shower, total privacy, perfect. You can see this place is run by devoted people. Thanks.
