My wife and I recently returned from a 10-night stay at Riu Karamboa Boa, and while we mostly enjoyed our trip, we felt somewhat disappointed considering the hotel’s TUI 5T Platinum rating and Riu brand. What We Enjoyed and Were Impressed With: • Impressive Foyer & Rooms – The foyer is spacious and visually impressive. Our room was well-equipped, featuring branded soft drinks, local beers in the fridge, ample bottled water, and a selection of local spirits. • Beautiful Grounds & Pool Areas – The hotel grounds were well-maintained, and the pool areas were 5-star quality, with plenty of sun loungers and parasols even at full capacity. The water park was a fun alternative. • Daytime Activities & Sports Bar – A wide range of activities was offered by an enthusiastic team. The sports bar was a great bonus, streaming multiple live UK football matches simultaneously. • Cleanliness & Friendly Staff – The hotel was spotlessly clean, and the staff was generally friendly and welcoming. • Food Quality & Variety – The main buffet restaurant provided an extensive selection of dishes, including multiple live cooking stations. Most of the food was of good quality, although some meats were tough. • The White Party – A spectacular and unforgettable experience! • À La Carte Restaurant & the speciality restaurants, Italian and Asian offered a relaxing ambience with attentive but not intrusive service. • Beachfront Location – Plenty of sun loungers & parasols available and shaded areas by the pools, the beach area also has plenty of sun loungers with shading from the palm trees. What Disappointed Us: 1. Chaotic Main Restaurant Experience • Evening dining was stressful – Noisy, overcrowded, and chaotic. Some tables were crammed just inches apart, and many were located right next to staff workstations, creating constant noise from plates and cutlery being cleared. • Buffet overcrowding – Navigating the buffet was a challenge, with guests bumping into each other, searching for tables, or reaching over others to access food. • Poor food etiquette – Some guests were picking food directly from the buffet with their fingers, which was quite unhygienic. • Lack of dining space – The main restaurant is too small for the hotel’s size. With limited availability in the à la carte & specality restaurants an additional two dining venues should be available for a hotel of this scale. • Food labeling issues – Many dishes were not labeled, including sauces, dips, and dressings—a serious concern for those with food allergies. 2. Disappointing Drink Selection • No pink gin, no Baileys, and no Prosecco (except at breakfast on Sundays or for an extra €20 per bottle). • Cocktails were limited and of poor quality. • All wine was served from a tap, except in the à la carte restaurants—but there was no noticeable improvement in quality. • No table service for drinks – Whether in the foyer or lounge, guests had to queue at the bar, which felt more like a 3-star experience
