I like the Holiday Inn Express brand and have found it provides reliable quality in many stays across the country. Until Cross Lanes. Our room was not up to the brand. The basic 2 queen room is the smallest I've seen at a HIE. I was very disappointed the window does not open by design. But the big problems are not physical design but cleaning/maintenance related. The grate on the HVAC system is thick w dirt. The desk chair pleather is discolored and peeling off, like a cat shredded it. The window is dirty (on the exterior, thank goodness), like someone threw something at it. The frig hinge cover is broken (tho the frig still works). The finish on the vanity in the bathroom is not just nicked in places but wearing away. There were two large stink bugs in the room (which we couldn't put out because the window doesn't open). Pool is closed for maintenance for the next 4 days. It's the first place my friend in hotel management suggested I check for bed bugs. No evidence of infestation, but that's how the room felt -- like the kind of place where management might not notice or address a bed bug infestation. Not everything was bad. Kudos to both the staff members we encountered. The front desk staff at check in was efficient and friendly. Their dinner recommendation fit our needs. Breakfast was good, consistent with the HIE brand offerings. Breakfast staff was friendly, kept the area clean and the food well stocked. The hotel is just moments off the interstate (tho difficult to find, requiring sharp turns with no signage). Bathroom paper products are better than bottom of the barrel. I appreciate the wall mounted toiletries (less waste than travel sized toiletries.) The pillows are comfortable. Rooms at the back of the hotel are very quiet (facing into a rock wall). Lots of the positives I have come to expect from HIE. I will stay away from this particular hotel, and be a bit more skeptical of the HIE label in the future.
