Celebratory lunch out: didn’t get into our first choice, but this place was a real winner! Great welcome, nice historic diningroom with quirky art and a real log burner, burning cheerfully. Delicious starters included venison tartare, beautifully chopped and blended with capers etc. with a cured egg yolk, just right texture between liquid and hard. Mains included Perthshire port loin chop, served sliced for ease of eating. Good veg and accompaniments. Pudding was a delightful sticky toffee pudding and cheeseboard: 4 well chosen cheeses served at room temperature, not chilled! The drinks included a nice citrus “mocktail” (driving) and a well made dry martini, chilled water arrived without having to ask and a nice bottle of Chilean Pinot Noir, replacing an unavailable Bulgarian one. With coffee, the total bill was £153.50 before service. Very good value for first rate cooking, ingredients, surroundings and ambience. Looking at the menu, and other lunchers, it would be perfectly possible to have 1 course and a glass of wine for £20. Highly recommended.
