R2 Rio Calma

My boyfriend and I have just spent 10 nights at the r2 rio, overall we have had a lovely holiday and I would recommend. So many positives about the hotel, staff on the whole were pleasant and friendly, just a couple of female (older) staff in the restaurant came across grumpy and not appearing to enjoy their job! The rooms were very clean, credit to the staff, and although on the smaller side were adequate for us. The hotel has a lovely feel about it, the design is beautiful inside and out. The bars vary depending on what you are looking for, the bar in the entrance was our go too, with a man playing the piano on an evening it was relaxing and a nice place to sit and have a chat. We didn't see any of the evening entertainment so can't comment on this. The outside seating in the main bar was nice on an evening with the beautiful water fountain. Areas which we did find slightly disappointing was the all inclusive restaurant. Although there is something for everyone, it just all got a little bit boring. Same things most nights, but we made the most of it and never felt hungry. The drinks are as you would expect in an all inclusive, large measures!! We did eat at the Edan a la carte one night, honestly not thr best meal we have had. Beautiful surroundings, but the food was not fine dining. It was nice to have a bottle of wine we both enjoyed an to have silver service but wouldn't recommend for what they charge. You have to hire a kettle, €20, which felt a lot but I needed my cuppa so paid it!! The hotel is definitely spending a lot of money upgrading the outside area where the mini golf use to be, and there is work starting to be carried out where the infinite pool ends, they also replaced all the dining chairs and tables while we were there. The hotel has had a lot of poor reviews, so we went with an open mind. Honestly all in all it's a lovely hotel and we did enjoy our stay. Well done R2 Rio nf thank you.

Stayed here last week . Lovely hotel but was put in a room above discotheque Really loud music playing till midnight ok of you like that but as we are both in our late sixties not good .however complained and got room changed much better Maybe they should put youngsters in these particular rooms. Restaurants very good both dinner and breakfast choices very good Staff excellent The only disappointment was 2 coffee machines serving hundreds of people we gave up trying most days . You need to hire a car as nothing nearby Costa Calma itself is disappointing as most pubs cafés seem to have all closed since last time we visited a consequence of all inclusive I would think All hotel staff are very friendly and helpful Hotel is very clean and public areas well maintained All in all an enjoyable stay

Booked the Royal Suite for the week. Wow what a room and so close to pools. Considering how busy the hotel is it’s so calm and relaxed with very little noise. So far the Staff have been amazing and so helpful. Food excellent and such a variety. Brilliant hotel looking to book again.

The hotel Itself looks beautiful. Couldn’t fault the appearance with beautiful lobby and windows. My first experience with customer care was also excellent. A guy named Santiago who is Canarian but lived in the same area of London that I’m from made for an interesting first conversation and natural helpfulness in directing me to where I needed to go on the island. Was patient in helping me to a fault. Perfect. Restaurant Other things about the hotel were not so good. And polarised the experience. And that is expressly the way the restaurant staff behaved consistently. I was ‘relieved’ on the last day to see another female guest being bullied and almost bossed around and away (politely told to do one) for asking for a fork. Literally the bane of my life. A guy is overheard the previous day chatting with another guest as also talking about his experiences with the same. I chimed in and said I agreed it was ‘hurtful,’ because that’s essentially what it is when you pay for a holiday and you’re made to feel as if you’re very presence is a burden they want to do away with. Quite literally the closest to a fawlty towers restaurant experience iv had. Staff had adopted an attitude of thinking it’s ok and normal to chastise and disrespect guests and whilst I certainly don’t expect / want red carpet treatment (it’s not relaxed) I don’t expect to be told off for forgetting my wrist band when my face is known by staff. Equally iv never in my life been in a restaurant where obtaining cuttlery should be an endeavour with emotional implications. Slamming cutlery down is a standard cue to tell you it’s time to leave. So meal times whilst could have been great were always subject to a slightly threatening atmosphere. Conversed with one other guest about this and observed another guest being told to go away when asking for a fork. Same happened to me and was left to sit. Another guest actually went and got cutlery for me off another table. However another staff member was helpful in getting me salami from the kitchen one night when it wasn’t put out on display but this caused scandalized looks amongst the other staff as if a rebellion was about to break out in their ranks. Pool. To be honest intuition told me not to bother with the pool and upon reading other reviews realized why : it’s chaos. Upon passing by it was very crowded and the music wasn’t very good. Ie. Ambience could have been cafe Del Mar and been pleasant but instead it was a tin can sounding kind of techno. That might have been to do with the aqua aerobics class however. Generally a competitive environment rather than a relaxing one. There is a pool bar selling burgers. And a shop. In addition to the mini supermarket in the lobby that sells crisps and drinks and other holiday essentials. The pool looks nice but wouldn’t swim in it as it’s so crowded by the pool side and wouldn’t have been relaxing Spa. We have stayed at the hotel throughout most of December for the last 3 consecutive years and have become very attached to the place. The grounds are beautiful, with lush, well-tended greenery and the staff are generally terrific. It does not trouble us that the hotel is a couple of kilometres away from the centre of town, as both the long beach walk and (alternatively) the walk through the El Palmeral gardens are very enjoyable indeed. The hotel pools are a good size (though the ‘heated’ pool could perhaps happily be a couple of degrees warmer at the end of the year, since, as December progresses, it can become a little challenging at first on cooler days). The unheated pool is quite icy in December but the plus is that the low temperature does make it less busy. Over the 3 years, the quality of the meals significantly improved and we fully enjoyed them by the second year. Great efforts have more recently been made to also improve the dining room environment (which was already quite nice). We did not eat well on our first visit, and would actually not have returned to the hotel were it not for greatly enjoying the company of all the friendly cats in the grounds. (Near the small controlled cat colony within the edge of the grounds there is a little sign headed by the words ‘R2 hotels - We love cats’. That helped win me over.) The hotel cats are much appreciated by very many customers and it was lovely to sit on a balcony this year where we could watch so many people stop to talk to them. We were glad that we returned for numerous other reasons too in the end. The hotel’s beachfront area was under redevelopment throughout December 2024, though work was proceeding very fast and the outcome shows signs of being another good improvement in, I imagine, the very near future. Care was being taken with regard to its impact upon the landscape, by way of setting a few low pavilions among the trees to provide new facilities, and the beachside pool area, which had fallen out of use, was also under restoration. One very slight niggle for us was that many of the half a dozen or so coffee machines were regularly out of service at breakfast and there could be long, slow queues at the working one(s). I gave up altogether one day, despite having arrived for breakfast at opening time (..and trying to find a teapot was near impossible most mornings). Such issues are really quite minor though, and the hotel definitely remains one of our favourite places to be.

Oh dear standards have dropped service in restaurant was very bad not because of staff but lack of them. No managers to be seen sort the fundamentals out first guys and lead from the front. These poor staff are running around ragged. 5 years we have been coming time to move on
