Booked the Domes of Corfu after a flawless stay at the Domes of Elounda in Crete several years ago. Unfortunately the Corfu experience was quite different and not what you’d expect from a five-star establishment. Starting with the plus points: - Visually, it’s impressive with tasteful terracotta decor, wooden panelling and lovely pools including one spanning the whole building adjoining the swim-up rooms. - Food across all restaurants on site was good, fresh and varied. Our half board ‘dine around’ package meant we could access the Haute Lounge for lunch, and sample the seafront Mezze and Asian Fusion restaurants too. For breakfast and other meals we used the Agora buffet which was well run with the option to sit on a balcony overlooking the sea or in a shady courtyard. - Staff are polite, friendly and welcoming - The setting on sandy Glyfada beach, is stunning. One of the nicest spots on the island and great for swimming and various watersports. Sunsets here are also quite spectacular. And the not so good points. - For a large hotel, Domes didn’t have anywhere near enough staff. With only the beach bar open to cover the drinks needs of the whole place, service was slow and inconsistent. The lack of staff also affected the general maintenance of the hotel, with overflowing baskets of dirty beach towels, inflatables and toys left strewn about the pool areas overnight and room service leftovers sat in corridors for longer than advisable in such hot weather. - Though there’s an adults only pool, the hotel is mainly set up to cater for families with very young children. Expect to find babies and toddlers screaming/running amok in the buffet area. - The location while geographically lovely is remote, bar the hotel there are only a couple of mini markets and some tatty beach bars nearby. Hiring a car and bracing yourself for the hairpin bend mountain roads is the best option to see the island. Otherwise it’s a 45 minute (and roughly 40 Euro each way) taxi ride or a cheaper but infrequent bus service to Corfu Town. I would recommend getting out and about to actually remind yourself you’re in Greece as the hotel can feel something of a bubble. - The rural location, food left out and lack of staff all contributed to the biggest issue encountered during our stay - cockroaches in our room. Our swim-up suite was on the end of the row next to the fire exit leading out onto a wooded area. I appreciate cockroaches aren’t unusual in a climate as warm as Greece but to have a parade of them coming under the door and then scuttling up the walls of your room at night aren’t what you expect in a five star hotel. Our room was cleaned daily but despite reporting this issue to reception several times we didn’t see any evidence of the promised pest control treatment. After two sleepless nights catching roaches in a toothbrush jar, we eventually moved to a different and thankfully creature-free room. It’s disappointing to have to share such a review but with mor
