New Inn at Coln

We came for lunch last Saturday. We were warmly welcomed and settled in a lovely sheltered sunny spot outside. The pub is beautiful in a peaceful village setting and we enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. The food offering was not too extensive which meant that every single dish was exceptional. Burgers were an elevated experience. Loved the quirky patterned plates! The guys working there that served us were really nice. Afterwards we enjoyed walking around by the beautiful picturesque river. Thank you for a lovely day!

I had recently spent one night at The New Inn. The reason for booking the New Inn was its proximity to Bibury. My original intention was to stay in Bibury but the hotels there were all full. So I booked New Inn instead, thinking that it will just be a short taxi ride to Bibury. It was a busy Friday afternoon. I asked the hotel for help with taxi. The staff gave me a list of 7 taxi companies and the use of a desk telephone. So I made the call, from taxi company No. 1 to No. 7, and then again but this time from No. 7 back to No. 1. The taxi companies’ responses were: no taxi available, did not answer the phone or the line was engaged (even after repeated calls). One particular company quoted me an exorbitant fare and I guessed in the hope that I will “stop bothering them”. In the end I didn’t get to visit Bibury. The staff gave me a walking tour leaflet for my self-guided tour to Quenington. The tour listed 32 instructions. I managed to follow them until somewhere in the middle I got lost and realised that I was walking in circles. I gave up and used my mobile phone’s GPS to look for the shortest route to return to New Inn. I think It will be helpful if the “Circular Walks” instructions include distances, for example, walk for approximately 800 metres, then turn left/right etc. My next suggestion to New Inn is, provide more descriptions, and be descriptive about landmarks so a foreign tourists unfamiliar with England can better navigate the route. My room was on Level 2 (no lift). The floor space was quite tight. I could hardly open my luggage bag without hitting the wall. I felt giddy when I was in the room. The timber floor gave a “creeky” sound when I moved around. It sloped downwards (I mean the timber floor). I experienced giddiness, as if I was standing on a moving boat. I had to place my hand on the wall or the bed for support. I didn’t make a fuss about it as I was staying for just one night. The room has no air con (there’s a desk fan) so I lifted the window panel and placed two books for support to hold the window. The guest room was otherwise pleasant, came with the usual amenities, it was clean and comfortable (other than the above points). Wifi worked well. I had a lunch, dinner and breakfast in New Inn. Overall food was delicious, staff were friendly and efficient. On my check out I’d decided to install Uber app on my phone and managed to book a car myself to get me to Swindon station. It would have been a better stay if I had a rental car with me.

The setting of the rooms was lovely and so was our family suite room. However it was quite dusty in the room and could tell it had been like that for a while. Staff on arrival were very friendly. However, they could have provided more information about the process with breakfast and check out (time etc) The restaurant was lovely and we both had high hopes looking forward to dinner but overall experience was not very enjoyable. The service was very slow. We waited 30+ minutes after receiving the bill to be able to pay. I had the ribeye steak for dinner and for £32 I was quite disappointed as the steak was reasonably small and arrived in the sauce which made it quite soggy. My partner ordered a chicken burger and was quite satisfied with this. We attended the dinner hoping to have a Sunday dinner each, but were told they have ran out. There were also multiple meals/items on the menu which were missing off the menu leaving a very limited option to start with. Car parking was quite limited but as the night went on, spaces freed up a bit. Something to keep in mind if you stay here as there is limited road side parking as well. Overall, the stay was lovely! However, there are multiple things I mentioned which would put me off staying here again.

Wow .... stunning Cotswold village. Stunning pub. Beautiful terrace. Pleasant service. Lovely wine list. And the food was amazing. Mediterranean influenced (at least the dishes we had were) and it was better than many desitnatikn restaurants. Go for a good selection to share from because the food is so tasty. It looks great too. On a summers day the terrace is beautiful. I will be back asap to thos cracking place.

First, let me say that I am not the biggest burger fan, but of all the burgers I have ever eaten, I actually like this one... My husband, who grew up on a cattle ranch in Wyoming and has eaten burgers all over the world, loved it too. We have lived in the area for almost seven years and had no idea this place existed , but now we do. This is a great little spot with excellent food, a fantastic atmosphere, and friendly people. The only downside is that parking can be a bit of an issue.
