I always base my vacation on “Would I return” the answer for the Grand Aston is NO”. If this helped, you’re welcome. If you are curious why, read on, and I will break down some things. It will be lengthy as I like to give fellow travellers a detailed review. As a pre-cursor, I feel I must confess we are members of the Unlimited Vacation Club. So maybe our expectations are different. The Resort – It is a very beautiful resort with lots of potential. Unfortunately, it is under-staffed, so when guests decide to be lazy of inconsiderate and toss their garbage all around the resort, there is not enough staff to clean up after them. We had an amazing room, and give credit where it is due, it was probably one of the nicest rooms we have ever stayed in. The view was incredible. We stayed in room 1054, and we could not have been happier. We never ran out of hot water, and the power was always on. The two issues we had with the room was once the A/C unit tripped and needed to be reset, so the room got very hot. The second we did not find out till it was time to leave, the entire building block #10, none of the phone’s work. This makes it a challenge to get a hold of the bellboy to pick up luggage, especially when you leave early in the morning. The Food – We never went hungry, but the selection varied from day to day. Day one we ate at the buffet, and it was fine. There was enough selection for everyone. After that, we ate breakfast at the Adult Buffet, I’ll get to that a bit later. We also ate at the French and Italian restaurants, and they were great. Yes, sometimes they would run out of a certain dish, but there were many to chose from. The staff – This is where the rating drops to a 3. And it probably would drop lower if it was not for one individual. Michel from the French restaurant was absolutely the best. It felt like we had known him our whole life. I hope he gets to hear how much we appreciated him. The rest of the staff seemed not too concerned you were even there. One example is the morning we had booked an excursion and had to be at the lobby for 07:40. I was at the adult buffet at 06:30 to get a bite to eat before we had to leave. I was informed they didn’t open till 07:00 ( I already knew that), but I said that was fine. The staff member said she would be able to get to me early, so that was extremely positive since I was on a time crunch. Well, she finally came to take my order at 07:10, and that was after she took another order from someone who showed up at 07:05. So naturally, I was not too impressed. I never did get my order because I had to leave for the lobby. The Entertainment – The place to be every night is the lobby. There are nightly shows that start in the lobby and move to the theatre. They were great. The Beach – Probably one of the main reasons people visit Cuba is the beaches. They are stunning. The beach at the Grand Aston is amazing as well.
