Rijk's Wine Estate & Hotel

Room was large and well appointed with lovely terrace . Do note that there are no wine tastings on Sundays, not even for guests - you have to delve deep into the website to ascertain this . We were immensely disappointed since this was planned as a special anniversary trip - their response was “you can buy some of our wine at dinner”. Fortunately we found Manley wine next door open and the owner, Marcus, gave us an excellent tasting session, full of stories and explanations and delicious wines - they had nice looking accommodation too! Dinner was good and breakfast lovely. The lack of personal response both by message and during our visit, rather tarnished the visit for us. It felt like a corporate event rather than a special occasion for us. The “eco pool” was quite unpleasant and slimy - personal choice inappropriate for this level of “quality” . Nice enough visit but not special .

This is our second visit to Rijks Hotel in 7 years. The standard of the rooms relative to to the price is not quite on par. Our unit was classified as a honeymoon suite and was spacious, but the fittings are dated and the unit would probably disappoint if actually booked for a honeymoon stay. The air conditioning units are dated and very noisy and they are a must in the hot summer months hence sleep quality was not good. The food is very good and the service is friendly. The estate seems to be orientated towards international travellers who may find the overall value reasonable. The water quality wasn't good and one morning there was no water at all. For an establishment of this type located on a export grade wine farm, I would have expected a water reservoir and filters to provide a clean reliable water supply.

Rijks Vinyard is on a Historic Cape Dutch farm where the Wine Tasting Element is housed in the main Farmhouse building which also houses the indoor Restaurant and accompanying outdoor ‘Terrace or Stoep’ Accommodation is provided in a variety of locations on the estate mostly in the original outbuildings that have been converted to Guest Accommodation units. The Lodgings are well appointed en-suite rooms with a private terrace area most of which have great views of Rijks Vines and a superb Mountain Backdrop. The estate is set in a tranquil position of the Tulbagh Valley just 1.5km out of the Quaint and Historic town of Tulbagh and makes a very pleasant location from which to explore the area and the many wineries in the valley.

Not only is the estate ridiculously gorgeous, the wines amazing but the staff were extremely accommodating of my change in plans and the food was indeed incredible too.

We had the privilege of staying at Rijks for a few days in one of their family cottages. Beautiful surroundings, well-furnished accommodation, delicious meals complemented by exceptional service. Adelaide especially went out of her way to make us feel totally at home. We look forward to our next visit to Tulbagh and Rijks.
