Peter Shields Inn & Restaurant

This was our first trip to Cape May, and our first stay at Peter Shields Inn. We all really loved this place! Located directly across the street from the Atlantic Ocean,with a gorgeous beach of silky soft sand! Our room had a perfect view of the ocean. It was decorated with a nod to “antique” but was contemporary, relaxed and comfortable, not stuffy. It also had the most beautiful bathroom I’ve ever seen! And everywhere was immaculate. Directly outside our room was a welcoming lounge with a balcony and table. After a long day on the beach and sightseeing, it was wonderful to come back to the Inn. We would all meet on the balcony with wine and cheese, before going to dinner. This was a very special stay for me and my friends. I’m looking forward to our next visit!

We have stayed in three different rooms at the PSI and enjoyed each one. The mattresses are unbeatable. The linens high quality, and the rooms very clean. The staff pleasant and helpful. We had a delicious dinner during our April stay. It was such a pleasure retreating to our comfy room and turning on the fireplace after dinner. For the first time we had breakfast, and it was excellent. This raises an issue, and hence the 4 instead of 5 stars. We are early risers, and having to wait until 8:30 for breakfast is a stretch. And for those of us wanting to get on the road earlier breakfast options would be appreciated. Another reason for the 4 stars - an inn of this caliber should have morning self-serve coffee. Not that I mind the Keurig set-up but fresh coffee from a dispenser would be preferable.

We have been guests at PSI for the past 3 years, sometimes twice a year. Unfortunately, this last stay did not live up to previous positive experiences. For starters, Room 3 is to be avoided --- the bathroom is so tiny that you can barely turn around in it without bumping into something. (For reference, I am 5 feet and under 115 lbs.) The air conditioning didn't work and we weren't even offered a comp for the inconvenience, (They put in an ineffective window box air conditioner with masking tape with a gap wide enough to put your hand through it). There were ants in the room. At breakfast, there were no black teas available --- just 1 decaf with the rest being herbals. The breakfast menu has been the same for years now. It's eggs, pancakes or oatmeal - that's it. Also, the lock on the side door for us guests returning to the inn past 6:30 p.m. was broken, so we had to call the manager who arrived with a bit of an attitude for her inconvenience, but couldn't open the side door either. She had to go around to the front to use her code for entry but couldn't open the side door from the INSIDE! You just can't make this stuff up! PSI really needs to get their act together....such a shame for such a beautiful building. But poor customer service will always bring a bring a business to its knees. We cancelled our September reservation.

Been staying for many years. We love the inn but the complimentary wine and cheese for guests is identical and the same offering to what they have serving for years. Please consider mixing it up a little bit so multi day guests can have something different from one day to the next
