The Corner House Canterbury

We stayed here for one night during our Kent/Canterbury trip. We also had dinner in the restaurant in the evening. The Good - Spacious Bathroom. - Period property with character. - Friendly staff and service - 24 hour parking offered for £14 in the car park behind. - Very tasty Lamb and Potato Dauphinois (for two), oysters on the menu. - Air conditioning and mini-fridge with milk and water in room. The Bad - No cooked breakfast option (it’s a restaurant with a kitchen!). Continental only - brought to your room (which could be seen as a good point). I can’t remember this being explained on check in though. - Small bed. Granted it’s an attic room - so that might explain it. - Value for money - really not the best. - Location: next to a busy road. View from the window was Londis & a Pizza place. The Ugly - We both had a terrible night’s sleep; felt the pillows and mattress were of poor quality. Tossing and turning, and both woke up feeling achy. - They offer a starter “dish” on their gluten-free menu which is basically just some leaves and tomato with a dressing. “Tomato and Fennel salad” it’s called. I’ve included a photo. It costs £9. When the waitress brought it out she called it a “side salad” which was telling. It had a few sporadic slithers of fennel and no “miso whipped tofu”. When I queried it she said “oh do you mean tomato?”… no I mean tofu. It’s a white creamy dip. Not wanting to go any further with it I just accepted her explanation that the tofu was *somewhere* in the dressing - but it clearly wasn’t the case… But £9 for what’s pictured? Give me a break!! Daylight robbery and an insult if I’m being honest. Wouldn’t stay here again unfortunately.

We stayed overnight at the Corner House and hadn’t checked about its food but decided in advance to eat there. Wow. A great meal. Beautifully cooked food (the mackerel chox bun starter was stunning) , a good choice of dishes, friendly and efficient service. A very lovely surprise (it was a great place to stay overnight too and, for Canterbury, good value).

We have just had a really lovely dinner and overnight stay for our anniversary, which was made even more enjoyable by the excellent service from the young waiters here. The atmosphere in the restaurant was lovely, it's understated, but the food quality definitely isn't. Locally sourced ingredients transformed into uncomplicated, delicious dishes. We had the slow cooked lamb , which was beautifully soft with dauphinoise potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Their brown bread ice cream is amazing and the blood orange sorbet full of flavour . We were staying the night in the Dickens Room , so didn't have far to go after . Our room was a really nice size , homely and warm - a touch too warm for me at night , but had we read the instructions properly , we could have cooled it down more. It's on the main road, but surprisingly not very noisy at all and they provide little earplugs in case. The breakfast was amazing! The most delicious homemade granola, yogurt, treacle bread toast and pain au chocolate. Oh, and an apple. Lots of tea, coffee hot chocolate provided and fresh milk in the fridge. We loved our short stay and would highly recommend both restaurant and room . We'll be back !

Traveled from Palmer, Alaska Spent two nights in Canterbury. This was a quaint, little hotel. I am in awe of the buildings in Europe. This was the best of the hotels we stayed at during this trip. We were in the Chaucer room. The room was spacious and clean. There were exposed beams and brick which added greatly to the ambience. Not much of a view out the window, as I believe we were on the back side of the building. However, the architectural details of the roof and material were in full view. My wife stayed in Canterbury to explore the castle while I took the opportunity to travel to Dover to see the cliffs. I had a quick bus ride and a nice hike out as far as the visitor center. I would have traveled further, but wanted to go to the Dover Castle. Hindsight being what it is, I should have continued my hike. When I arrived at the castle, I found that it was closed. On my way out, I stopped at the White Horse pub and had a couple of pints. Then a short walk through town to view some of the Christmas lights before hopping the bus back to Canterbury. We spent the remainder of the evening wandering around town and ended up eating at The Old Weavers House that was established in 1500. Would recommend spending a few more days to take in the rest of the sites.

I booked the corner house bed,dinner and breakfast for my partners birthday (24th October) we stayed in the Dickens room. The hotel firstly was amazing with communication before, during and after booking. I had arranged a bottle of wine which was in the room on arrival. Parking is £14 which they help sort in the hotel, which considering the location was good value for 24 hours. The room was clean, spacious and really lovely. They had all the amenities and even ear plugs, which some might appreciate as it did get slightly noisy, but I knew the location when booking, it didn't take away from the experience at all. The dinner was Impeccable the service was perfect. The breakfast was a great continental, all local and fresh ingredients. Obviously if you'd like a cooked breakfast you'd be better off elsewhere. Very long story short don't hesitate to book and we want to come back.

Room had everything and we got for a very good price. Breakfast was continental served in the bedroom. Air conditioning which was needed as boiling hot. Mood lighting, lots of information, coffee, teas, lovely bathroom. Pity we didn't have time to book the restaurant as it looked and smelled delicious. Will definitely return so we can sample the restaurant. Parking at the back at a cost of approx £14 per 24 hrs if staying at hotel. Perfect location and no noise.
