Roman Camp Country House Hotel

The hotel is charming. It may be getting a bit tired in spots, but that adds to its charm. Our room, the yellow parlor, was enormous with a comfortable seating area. The shower had great water pressure. The bed was comfortable. The common rooms in the hotel are lovely and cozy. There was a fire going in the parlor. The grounds are pleasant. We saw several deer. Breakfast was elegant and delicious. We ate in The Bistro both nights and the food was very good.

We had an overnight stay here, dinner and breakfast We were made to feel very welcome, and the staff attentive. and efficient. The whole hotel exudes a traditional charm and elegance. Our room was very elegant, with a jaccuzzi bath and superb shower. There are several sitting rooms all beautifully furnished with comfortable sofas and chairs. The fires were lit as weather is beginning to feel autumnal. The gardens and extensive grounds are fabulous. Now to the food! Easily the best food we have ever had anywhere. Beautifully presented and delicious. Canapés were stunning! Breakfast was up to a very high standard. We would definitely recommend this lovely place and would love to return.

Very tired hotel in need of some serious upgrading. Decent grounds and welcoming staff but for the price, the room was substandard. Poor plumbing, poorly thought out bathroom and limited cupboard space. The lounge is good but the extension conservatory is so in need of work there was a hole in the window frame you could get your hand through.

Quaint and charming property set within lovely, peaceful grounds. Very impressive public rooms which provided relaxing respite from the outside world. High quality of service from staff throughout. Whilst well equipped and very comfortable, the standard room was dated to a certain era with a slightly musty smell as soon as you walked in. It was neither classic nor contemporary. Tasting menu was very restrictive with little option for choice. All the sample menus had vegetarian option but not on our visit and felt chastised for asking for an alternative. Turned out to be a very unsatisfying meal. Wine extortionately over priced. Breakfast was well executed and served but not of the quality it should have been at this price end. The hotel seems to appeal to an older clientele of a certain type. Admittedly, when it comes down to it, it’s a matter of personal taste, for instance my partner loved it. Just not what I was looking for in this price bracket so left disappointed. Lack of interest from the receptionist/manager in our visiting experience said it all.

Just enjoyed a lovely weekend at this fabulous hotel. The room was small but cosy. Amazing food in the restaurant for dinner. Great food in the potting shed ( bistro) on site for our other evening. Full Scottish breakfast delicious especially the haggis! The staff were very friendly and attentive especially William serving us the a la carte dinner. Highly recommend this hotel for a special break. Plenty of walks to do in the area.

The hotel and Callander were perfect for us. We stayed four nights. The king bed was comfortable and the room was quiet. The room was also quite large with a sitting area with two comfortable chairs. The bath was stone with a heated floor and a heated towel rack -- somewhat new. The common areas were amazing -- just what you would hope for in a country inn: overstuffed chairs with a fire and service for drinks. We had breakfast which was great and ate a couple of meals in the bistro which was excellent. The inn is on a river and has extensive gardens to walk in. It feels like it is in the country, but is also steps from downtown. The Callander area is great for outdoor activities, we hiked to a waterfall, climbed Ben A'an for amazing views, and biked Lake Katrine (boat + bike). As perfect as it was for us, it might not be perfect for everyone. The building is well kept up but it is old so there are rough edges and places in need of work if you look closely. There isn't a lot of staff so the bar wasn't always staffed, but you could wait a bit (if you are into the quiet pace of a country inn) or find someone who would jump in. We found the staff to be very friendly and quite helpful especially with our many questions.

My husband booked afternoon tea for my birthday. It was originally booked for Friday 24th May at 2.30pm but we had to change this. My husband called up and the receptionist said it was no problem to change it to the bistro at 1pm on the following Saturday. On arrival we were advised that the Bistro did not do afternoon tea. The waitress checked the diary and said we were not in the hotel diary either and that afternoon tea did not start until 2.30. My husband explained that he phoned and rearranged it. We then heard the waitress call across to the main hotel and from the one sided conversation we heard it was clear that she was trying to sort something for us and the person on the other end was saying no. She then advised us the hotel manager was coming to speak to us. He arrived and was very agitated and on the defensive from the start. He stated that it was not possible to book afternoon tea at 1pm or at the Bothy. We told him the receptionist had said it was ok but he was absolutely definite that could not have happened. We asked if we could come back at 2.30 and were given a flat no as the hotel needs 24hrs notice for afternoon tea (for 2 people). His attitude was basically it was our issue and not his. Accepting that mistakes happen we thought we would have lunch at the Bothy. The waitress came with the menus and she was apologetic and offered us a free bottle of wine. Explaining that my husband was driving she said she would comp something. A good 20 minutes later our order hadn’t been taken. A lady who was seated outside (after us) came in to order. I can only assume she was fed up waiting. A young male waiter appeared. He took the lady’s order and then attended to the other outside tables. At this point we decided to leave. I looked for the waitress we had been dealing with to advise her we were leaving but thank her for trying to sort something out for us. There was no one in the bothy but the chef was outside sitting on a chair. I asked if he knew where his colleague was but he just shrugged his shoulders at me. The young waiter told me she was over in the hotel and he’d call her. He did this but when he came off the phone he said the manager would meet us. Again the manager was agitated and defensive. He would not accept our feedback nor understand our disappointed. When I told him about the chef not engaging with me he said he need to get his side of the story. His position remained that you cannot get afternoon tea at 1pm. End of. He just did not care about the service we were given. All in all it was a terrible customer experience.

What a lovely quirky place. Afternoon tea was excellent. A warm welcome from the staff and the pleasant seating beside the fire! Loved the place as soon as I entered and wasn’t disappointed with the quality of the afternoon tea and service. Well worth a visit.

We have just returned from a 2 night stay in the Roman Camp Hotel and it was perfect in every way. Prior to our stay, whenever I contacted the hotel, the staff were polite and extremely helpful. On arrival everything I had requested was exactly as I could have wished for. Nothing was too much trouble. The hotel building itself was wonderful, so quirky with lots of fascinating rooms and features. Six of us dined in the Potting Shed Bistro on the first night and the food was exceptional and was enjoyed by everyone. I can thoroughly recommend a stay in this hotel and we can't wait to go back again.
