I booked and paid for this hotel online on the lunchtime having just completed a 1200 mile road trip for a reconnaissance mission for a charity bike ride. You usually know what you’ll get with a Campanile, but this fell well below expectations. Having “paid” online I was rudely told that the hotel had no record of the payment and demanded I paid again at reception rather than investigating. No apology for any inconvenience etc. I await a statement but I am pretty sure I will have been charged twice. My room, or felt like a cell, was located on the ground floor of one of the cell blocks. I opened the door to be confronted with, firstly, the strong smell of sewage. The room was about the size of my under-stairs cupboard. Upon closer inspection, it was filthy. The carpet was stained, the walls were marked with stains, cobwebs and dust everywhere. Worst of all was the bathroom, where there had obviously been a fire caused by an overhead heater. The heater had been replaced but instead of redecorating they had just screwed a new one over the burnt paper (see photos). The food was fine (which is why it gets a second star rather than 1), but the service was abrupt bordering upon rude. Avoid this place, it needs a complete overhaul of both the facilities and service standards.
