Playa Negra Guesthouse

This garden oasis is a beautiful place to spend some time in Limon. The many animals we saw made the experience fantastic. The sweet couple that owns the property are friendly, knowledgeable, accessible, and accommodating. It is literally steps from the beach and at one point there were 5 sloths plus a baby in the trees in front of the property by the beach. The owner is passionate about maintaining an environment that encourages the animals to be there and he is a master at finding them and will love to point them out to you.

This is a lovely property with beautiful grounds, spacious room and welcoming owners. We stayed 6 nights and really appreciated the pool, gardens and convenience of being right across the road from the beach. We stayed in room 1 and we’re so happy we chose one with a/c as it really got toasty during the day. It’s a 10-15 min walk to the village center for restaurants and small groceries. We saw sloths & toucans on the property as well as countless birds. Book it and you’ll be as happy as we were!

My family just completed our fourth stay at Playa Negra Guesthouse. We first came here when our kids were young and they still love coming to PNG as adults. The hosts, Marise and Pierre, are lovely and consistently go above and beyond to make your stay extra special. Over the years Marise has arranged zip-lining, white water rafting, hikes in the Cahuita National Park, snorkeling, transpo to/from San Jose, transpo to/from the Cahuita bus terminal, etc. for us. She works with trusted local operators who they know, having owned PNG for many years. You pay the tour operator, taxi service, etc. directly. It’s always a reasonable price. PNG is not earning any commission - they are simply being helpful. All that being said, we now stay at PNG for the tranquility of it and not the excursions. The grounds are a jungle paradise with geckos, sloths, poison dart frogs, birds and more galore. The pool is gorgeous and there’s a well-stocked honor bar that also includes soft drinks, water, juice, etc. The rooms and bungalows are spacious and clean. Just across the street is the Caribbean beach. PNG is a short walk into town where there are plenty of dining options, shops, a large supermarket, and the Cahuita National Park. There are also great dining options within steps of PNG. We highly recommend Playa Negra Guesthouse and can’t wait to return again.

This was our second visit to the Playa Negra Guesthouse and it was just as magical as we remembered. We will be back! Marise and Pierre are the best hosts and maintain the grounds and accomodations beautifully. While relaxing at the pool we saw sloths and iguanas just doing their thing in the trees above. So cool! The beach is easily accessible across a quiet little street. Bars and restaurants can be found with just a short walk in either direction. The entrance to Cahuita National Park is about a 15 minute walk. We did not have a car, so we rented bikes from a souvenir store in town and got around Cahuita that way. There are shuttles/taxis available if needed for further exploration. Whenever we had questions about the area, things to do or where to eat, Marise always had answers and was happy to help. Highly recommend!

This is a lovely small guest house right next to Playa Negra beach in Cahuita and a perfect base for exploring the South Caribbean coast- only a 20-25 minute drive to puerto viejo and nearby beaches, Cocles and Punta Uva- but much more chill. The hosts are very friendly and helpful and full of enthusiasm for the wildlife in their garden and all around. Perfect for families with kids with a nice pool to relax and lots of grounds to explore with birds, agoutis, sloths, and amazing tree frogs.

Truly the best place on earth. What a Gem. It’s worth every penny. Friendly owners, trustworthy staff, clean, great price. Seen all of the monkeys and sloths and frogs. All of Costa Rican experience in one place.
