Great improvements under new owners. Now a pleasant place to sit for a drink and food. Lots of cosy areas, bar service only. We have been coming to the Dolphin for over 30 years and it has been so sad to see its decline. We feel that with a few ‘tweaks’ the hotel can once again be Beer’s Jewel in the Crown. However there needs to be improvement from the food/kitchen side of things. We called in on Sunday 1st June around 7.30pm and ordered drinks while we looked at the menu. Having made our choices we were told neither were available. In the end we opted for the ‘small roast’ offer one of which was the vegetarian. It wasn’t what we would normally choose but was hot and tasty. We came back again on the Monday at the same time and asked if the Nourish Bowl and Fish Pie were available, told yes they were so ordered drinks and 5 minutes later went back to order food. Order taken then told neither dish was available. Had we known this we wouldn’t have ordered drinks and we would have tried the other hotel that was open. Eating is very limited in Beer particularly Sunday, Monday, Tuesdayacce out of the very high season. We ended up choosing a bacon chop for my husband and as I am vegetarian there was little choice so had 2 starters. Chop was ok, starters adequate. Disappointing. Going forward management need to ensure specials board is kept updated and bar staff know what is and isn’t available. The Dolphin has a great opportunity to be the first choice, for eating, for holiday makers staying in the village. Finally on the Tuesday we had a drink in the little beer garden at tea time. Unfortunately the tables were not clean and needed a really good wipe down. Such a shame as could be a pleasant place to sit. I appreciate these are teething problems and hope management take note. The Dolphin is definitely on the ‘up’ long May it continue.
