Kumu Beach

Who designed and brought to fruition this garden of tranquility and beauty? I spent three perfect nights here (first night with a friend and two solo) during the off season. A storm hit the coast on the first night and the waves of the Indian Ocean crashed against those beach rocks at Kumu like God's wrath were about to be unleashed. When morning arrived, the staff had already cleared away all evidence of the previous night's inclement weather and I enjoyed a tasty breakfast of egg hoppers and curry on the breezy deck of the hotel. The setting has to be experienced to be fully appreciated. So postcard-perfect it was surreal: from the swaying coconut trees to the view beyond from the infinity pool. The staff is unintrusively attentive and happy to please. They take a stay at Kumu Beach over the top and are key to what was a memorable vacation. The menu is extensive. Chef Indika-- how does he manage it? There are so many items to choose from, considering there aren't more than a dozen rooms on site. He and his staff do a stellar job consistently turning out fresh, yummy, and beautifully presented dishes. Rooms are well-kept and thoughtfully equipped with attention-to-detail I appreciated (like a beach bag I could use while I was there). Thank you to Ruchira, Chef Indika, Lahiru, Yugan, Nilanchana, and many others whose names I didn't catch for your hospitality and sharing the spirit of Sri Lanka with me. If I'm lucky, I'll return next time for a longer stay!

We’ve stayed at Kumu thrice now and would not hesitate to return! We simply cannot fault anything. From the friendly service to the unfailingly consistent excellence of the food every single time, Kumu feels like coming home. The easy access to the relatively private, wide stretch of beach is a big plus.

Balapitiya Beach is a scenic stretch of coastline located in the town of Balapitiya in Sri Lanka. It's known for its relatively serene environment, palm-fringed shores, and clear waters, making it a popular spot for relaxation and beach activities. The beach is also situated near the Maduganga River, which adds to its natural beauty and offers opportunities for river tours and wildlife spotting.

I don’t know where to begin! The photos don’t even do this property justice - the rooms, the pool, the sunsets and the peaceful vibe of this hotel are unmatched. We were lucky enough to get married here and spend 3 nights with our family and I can’t explain to you how beautiful it was. The whole team went above and beyond to make it the most special time for us - can’t thank them enough! The food was AMAZING, the sunset was the best we’ve ever seen and the private beach made this property an absolute stand out. This is somewhere you could stay for a week or more as the room, location and food are just perfect to unwind and relax. The rooms and bathrooms are huge and absolutely stunning, all with amazing views and we had the best sleeps here. We were technically here in “off season” and it was still incredible due to the awesome pool that feels like it’s floating above the ocean. The beach is also basically private due to the hotels position and it is so so beautiful. We will certainly be back - I even cried leaving Kumu Beach after having best experience and not wanting to leave. Lucky we were going to more Teardrop Group properties after - all of which are amazing! ALL the staff, chefs and management were so accommodating and my family cannot thank them enough for the most beautiful time.

Kumu is a beautifully appointed guest house, beach front with five star service. Our daughter decided to have her destination wedding at the property, which was amazing. The staff made sure the day was memorable with a dash of Sri Lankan culture, which included traditional Sri Lankan dancers and singers, concluding with a delicious Sri Lankan Feast for all the family. Our Australian family of all ages really enjoyed the property, especially relaxing and swimming in the lovely pool. We had a variety of room types and all were well appointed and luxurious. Breakfast which is included in the tariff was the best we had in Sri Lanka. The massage was awesome and just what we all needed after travelling. Could not fault this property or its staff. The staff organised day trips to amazing Galle Fort which is only a short drive away. We hope to return as it was such a wonderful accommodation. It is awesome for groups and families and also works for couples. Social hour is a fabulous chance to enjoy a GnT with other guests. We enjoyed the company of the other guests that were from all over the world. If you prefer a quiet Social Hour there are plenty of locations on the property that you can enjoy a private drink or two. Walks on the beach are especially romantic as it is very private with hardly any people on it. However, if you are travelling with a group or a large family, and do not wish to rent a villa, this is the perfect location. The staff go above and beyond to make sure everyone has an incredible time.

Another top class boutique hotel provided by Teardrop Hotels. Ideally located for those who have transport and want to do day trips to Colombo and/or Galle, and avoid the hustle and bustle of these big cities. Spotless, perfectly well equipped, spacious and airy rooms and public spaces. All the staff were terrific, unassuming and well trained. Excellent Sri Lankan and western food provided by the chef and his team. Very close proximity to the ocean and beach, which I am sure is safe for swimming during the non monsoon season. The lovely infinity pool was the perfect substitute to cool off, enjoy a drink and take in the sound of the waves. Highly recommended for the discerning traveller who wants to visit the south west of Sri Lanka.

Love staff, amazing food and stunning scenery. I would highly recommend Kumu Beach if you are going to Sri Lanka, the views are 2nd none and there is a very relaxed vibe there. There is a door to the beach so you can go for a walk on a completely empty beach.

Boutique hotel, with comfortable size room and bed that looked out onto the gardens. Food delicious and the chef was quite happy to vary the food if you wanted something different. Swimming pool warm and very inviting in the heat of 35 degrees. Fantastic friendly staff especially Ruchira (hope the wedding goes well), Umamangi and Prabriath.

Scenery at the location is just wow! The cleanliness and the staff service are excellent. The Pool is warm in the morning and that’s really great. Better if the food portions could be improved. The garden area is nicely landscaped. I loved my stay.
