I never write reviews as I generally enjoy pretty much every hotel experience, however the Marriott Cala do Volpe is the BIG EXCEPTION. The property is very nice and the rooms are fine (with the exception of a bath towel in our room having a brown stain). Pool is huge, but no one goes in because they refuse to heat the pool. I am sure they will call it “refreshing”, but realistically, I think they are trying to save costs on heating such a large pool. The BIG problem is that this is a Marriott hotel trying desperately to be an exclusive yacht club. Instead of focusing on service, they go to great lengths to create this illusion to try to justify their exorbitant pricing ($2k-$3k euros for a room, 40 euros for a cocktail, 240 euros per person for a lunch buffet). From the minute we arrived with our family, it has been one insane example after another. I checked-in after a full day of travel at around 7pm. We put our bags in the room and my wife and I headed out to explore the property as we always do. First stop was the terrace to look at the view. As soon as we walked out we were getting looked up and down and within 20 seconds, a man from the hotel approaches me to ask if I am guest of the hotel. I said I was and then he strangely asks what my room number was as if I was lying. Then I was told I had to leave because the dress code was no shorts. I was wearing nice shorts with loafers, but fair enough, the outdoor terrace has a dress code. Would have loved to know that up front and not be literally kicked out of a place in front of my wife and a bunch of people, but okay. So then we head to the lobby to figure out where the pool was. Within seconds, another person walks up. Same routine. “Can I help you?” I say we are looking for the pool. She then asks me if I am a guest. I said I was and then again I get the question as to what my room number is. The craziest thing. I had literally checked in 15 minutes prior. I let her know and she responds by telling me that shorts are not allowed in the lobby. It went further down hill from there. Same thing at the outdoor gym. It was 80 degrees outside and so I take my shirt off. The gym staff come up to me to inform me that I had to put my shirt on. I asked politely if I could just move to the grass area. They responded letting me know that I could only have my shirt off at the pool. The whole dress code thing was a really strange experience considering they never told me up front and then seemed to randomly enforce. Over the few days, I saw people in the gym with their shirts off and people in lobby and patio with shorts on after 7:30pm. My wife felt so uncomfortable and wanted to leave early. I felt pretty embarrassed throughout. I will never stay there again and I would recommend others pass as well.
