It was my extreme luck and pleasure to stay a week at Pacha Ecolodge and to kayak 2 great rivers with Kayak Ecuador. These two companies are owned and operated by Santiago Canala-Echevarria and Daniela Cabrera Darquea. Pacha Ecolodge is built on land that was once farm land, but is now reclaimed, by a rain forest with plants chosen and beautifully landscaped by the owners. Every building has been situated to take advantage of the best views of the surrounding mountains, and the best locations to listen to the rain fall or see the sun come up. You can stay in a rooms or cabins. The cabins are private and give the impression that the only thing that exists are you and nature. Winding paths through the beautiful landscaping take you to the dining area, a gym, a lounge, the kayak equipment warehouse, or to the Misahuallí, river which lies at the bottom of the property. The rooms are clean, luxurious, and full of light. Natural self-care products are used and encouraged. The food was incredible, fresh, and nutritious. I was introduced to edible Ecuadorian plants I'd never heard of before, including two types of tea. Daniela takes joy in finding fresh ingredients and creating beautiful meals. She is also responsible for the landscaping around the property, planting all sorts of beautiful plants that give a feel of a well-curated botanical garden. Santiago is a world-class white-water kayaker who will assess your kayaking abilities and then take you on kayaking adventures that you will remember for the rest of your life. I was lucky enough to kayak on the Napo, a major tributary of the Amazon, and the Misahuallí. He can take you on adventures with perfect equipment on a number of rivers based on your experience and/or thrill-level. Every trip down the river is a site-seeing tour. Santiago will spin the kayak around so you can see orchids growing on the shore, and will tell you stories of the area and the people. I was taken to lunch at wonderful restaurants in Tena that had such incredible food, I still crave it. There was great communication from start to finish. I was even picked up in Quito. The proprietors are warm, funny, smart, accommodating, and very helpful. They even found a trip for me into the Amazonian jungle. I felt like I was the most important client they'd ever had. I can't thank them enough, and I highly recommend this experience.
