The Athlone Farm Homestead, together with its spacious home and 10 historic outbuildings and farm structures, sits on 31 acres of the estate and reflects the lifestyles and activities of Virginia’s farmstead developments during the second half of the 19th century.ATHLONE’S HOME:Athlone’s original 6500 square-foot home was constructed in two separate wings, the West wing circa 1815, and the East wing circa 1856. In 1996, the home was lost to fire, but was reconstructed by the family a year later exactly one foot off its original foundation.Athlone’s home is fashioned in two distinct, fully equipped living quarters, East and West wings. The two wings combined can sleep up to 18 people. The home is beautiful, comfortable, roomy, well furnished, and perfect for families, retreats, reunions, and conferences.Each wing features fully equipped eat in kitchens, well-appointed bathrooms and bedrooms, delightful living/family rooms, streaming TVs, wireless internet, and direct access onto the expansive back porch.The larger East wing also features a formal parlor, a sunroom, a third-floor entertainment room, a tranquil library, a formal dining room (table seats up to 10), and ADA compliant accommodations and access. There is ample paved parking and self-check-in. We offer excellent amenities to all guests.ATHLONE’S GROUNDS:Athlone’s setting is rural, peaceful, and quiet, but also extremely well located to take advantage of numerous area activities—hiking and biking trails, local breweries and wineries, restaurants, historic sites, and area colleges and universities. For early risers, there is nothing more peaceful than sitting on the porch with a cup of coffee, watching the sun come up in the East, while the cows graze in the pasture.The porch is beautifully outfitted for dining and with rocking chairs to take full advantage of wonderful views of the property and for easy grilling off the kitchens.The family’s striking brick and iron memorial garden also offers shared patio visits and a gas firepit for late night story telling. The house is just minutes away from Piney River, breathtaking hikes, fly fishing, wineries and breweries, and just a short drive from Wintergreen Resort. There is no shortage of things to do in the area year-round. If you’re looking for a quiet, secluded getaway, simply relax in front of the fireplace and take in the stunning mountain view while the stress melts away.The Space:The cottage is a spacious three bedroom ranch with three full bathrooms and two main suites. The gorgeous modern kitchen is fully appointed with everything you’ll need for your stay. A dining table and island seating provide plenty of space for you, your friends and family to enjoy meals together. A gas fireplace anchors the upstairs living space, surrounded by comfortable furniture and expansive views of the Priest and Little Priest mountain peaks.Each bedroom is outfitted with a queen bed and both main suites feature a reading nook and attached bathroom.Each full bathroom is stocked with toiletries and towels for your convenience. Additionally, the lower floor couch converts to a full-size sleeper.The lower floor provides a massive recreation space to watch movies and play games, while also carving out a workspace for the road warriors (again, with that amazing view) and a cozy wine bar area to sit and enjoy a glass of your favorite local Virginia wine.Other things to note:Mountain Haven Cottage is situated in Amherst County and sits near the border with Nelson County. Each county is home to some of the best breweries and wineries in VA. You will find Blue Mountain Brewery, Outback Brewing Company, Lovingston Winery, Ankida Ridge Winery, Lazy Days Winery, all within 20 mins of the cottage. Further up route 151 into Nelson County, you’ll find dozens more wineries and breweries only 30-40 minutes away, to include Devil’s Backbone, Three Notch’d, and Bold Rock. For the active adventurers, you’ll find a wide range of hikes in the nearby Priest Wilderness, James River State Park, Mount Pleasant, and Crabtree Falls areas. Wintergreen ski resort is only a short drive away and offers year-round activities for the entire family. For golf enthusiasts, you’ll find the Winton Country Club only minutes down the road or Devil’s Knob course located on the Wintergreen property. Local restaurants in Amherst and Arrington include Bonfire, Vito’s, and Briar Patch. Come get a front row view from our property of beautiful highland cows and goats. We are nestled in the blue ridge mountains with gorgeous scenery all around. Also enjoy our hot tub fitted for 6 people on the patio. The property also has 2 miles of trails that are great for hiking and biking. We also are able to let you feed the cows and goats treats and show them some love. Come and enjoy peace, quiet and animals!The spaceThe private space in the basement has a kitchen, living room and dining room together, one bathroom, a laundry room and 2 bedrooms. One bedroom contains a queen bed and the other room contains 2 twin size beds. The kitchen comes with all the necessities as well. Outside of the house is a barn and a open field that holds most of the animals, so they will be towards the fence to say hi sometimes. We also have about two miles of trails on the property that are good for walking or mountain bike or dirt bike riding. There are green arrows through out the property to guide you as well. I personally ride through my property often on my dirt bike/mountain bike so if your interested in riding, that is an option as well.Guest accessAs you head up the driveway you will see a wagon on your right with a sign that says parking, you are going to want to turn right beside that and head towards the barn. There you will see a sign that says parking. This recently renovated riverfront home is a blend of historic charm and modern elegance. Originally built in 1926 as a log cabin made of real chestnut, it has since been used as a US Post office, country market, and later a house in 1936. The home is nestled between the Cardinal and Little Priest mountains in the Blue Ridge Range and the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest.The main attraction of the Chestnut House is the outdoors. Just a step away from the back door is the Piney River. Enjoy the sounds of this rushing river from the beautiful sundeck furnished with Adirondak chairs, or the picnic tables, rock fire-pit, or hammock. This two-story cottage offers scenic river and mountain views, a wood stove, chef’s kitchen, and sleeping accommodations for up to six guests. Open the windows and enjoy the sounds of the rushing Piney River and nature throughout the house. A fun fact about the home: Growing on the side of the home facing the river is a very old, almost extinct, American Chestnut Tree. This is why we call it the “Chestnut House”.Lastly, don’t forget your fishing rods! We are 9 miles from Liberty, making it easy to visit your student. If you are an outdoor enthusiast, we rent our jet skis, and blow-up kayaks and paddle boards. Access to the river is a quick 8 minute drive.The home has 4 bedrooms, with 6 beds. There are also 2 camping cots available for use.The home is sitting on 1.5 acres with the forest behind. In the summer, you can enjoy catching fireflies at night. During the day, rent our blow-up kayaks or paddle boards and drive 8 minutes to the river to enjoy them. We also rent our jet skis if you are interested in driving to Smith Mountain Lake. Owners occasionally stay in separate basement apartment with private entrance.
