We live less than an hour away from the Allanton Inn We fancied a day out exploring the north of Northumberland and the Southern Borders with a stopover. The Allanton was ideally placed and gets good reviews from e.g. Sawday’s. We arrived to a very friendly welcome, were quickly checked in and shown our room (room 5). Even though it is quite a small room it had sufficient space for the 2 of us which was very well thought out and uncluttered. There are views over the (excellent) beer garden from the bay window (also a good place to watch the local bird population flit back & forth). We headed back downstairs almost immediately to the bar and took our drinks into one of the pods in the garden for a ‘post drive’ relax. We dined at the Allanton and were impressed by the interesting and varied menu which included a selection of ‘small plate dishes. We found the main dishes to be inventive, well cooked and tasty although the generous portions defeated us! After dinner we retired to bed and soon drifted off. Breakfast the next morning was just terrific - a superb array of mainly home made stuff (granola, preserves, etc.) complemented by the most full Scottish of which I had the excellent bacon, superb haggis & eggs fried just the way I like them. Katrina and William run a high quality but relaxed & informal operation here and those of the supporting team we met were as friendly & welcoming as the hosts. Thanks to all of them. Would we go back? - definitely, would we recommend?- without question or hesitation.
